What Those 6 Digits Actually Mean
The Postal Index Number (PIN) system was introduced on 15 August 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar. It was designed to simplify mail sorting by removing language barriers and address confusion. Digit 1: The Region (e.g., 5 for South). Digit 2: The Sub-region or Postal Circle (e.g., 50 for Telangana). Digit 3: Combined with the first two, it identifies the Sorting District. Digits 4-6: Identify the specific Delivery Post Office. Today, India Post manages over 1.5 lakh post offices using this efficient 6-digit identification.
